  1. I install billboard copies for a living. Thus, I am climbing metal and wooden structures all day. I needed a boot that is both flexible and supportive. Straight out of the box, this boot was ready to work -- no break-in needed. I have had this pair for a little more than a year and the only thing worn down on the boots is the soles. The metal structures I climb are hard on soles. Anyways, here in a few months I will purchase 2 more pair (in case Irish Setter stops manufacturing them). Another positive attribute is that the boot is completely water proof -- major plus. I recommend this boot for climbing billboard structures, hunting and hiking.

    1. I have been wearing red wing / Irish setter boots for over 20 years now. I have yet to find another brand of boot that is as comfortable, durable and last as long as my red wings/ Irish setters. In the past I have tried other brands as well as friends and coworkers have and nothing comes close to red wings/ Irish setters. When I mention red wings/ Irish setters to the newer people in the construction industry a lot of them always comment back about price. To answer them back I explain that in this case you get what you pay for. I see it time and time again. These people will buy cheap boots and 3 to 6 months later they are complaining about how their boots are junk already. My response back to them is I tell them, I told you so. Point to my boots and say these red wings/ Irish setters are anywhere from a year old to 6 years old depending on which pair I’m wearing at the time. I also owe credit to Will and his guys at the Delafield Red Wing store, not only did I finally get a red wing boot store close to home. I get top notch service from these guys that have known me on a first name basis basically since they opened the store. I even stop in by them when I’m in the area to just say hi and shoot the breeze, and continuously tell them how great the products they sell are.

    1. I don't have this exact boot but it's the closest I could find to mine by looks. I've had mine four or five years but I'm 77 and they were not worn hard. I put mine on the other day to walk about 100 yards to my deer stand and the heel separated walking across the yard. They have been used to walk to my stand and four or five times a year to hunt pheasants. I can only hunt pheasants for a few hours. I see these are made in Vietnam. Mine were made in China. Looking at the other boot, I can see the same thing is going to happen. I'm going to glue it back on and try to get some more wear out of it. The only reason I would ever buy another pair of Irish Setter boots is because it's hard to find a 7 EE and like others have posted mine are small on the width.

  2. I have 4 pairs of high quality leather boots; LL Bean Cresta Hiking, Danner Officer Leather Boots, Chippewa upland boots and now Red Wing 361 Elk Tracker. The Elk Tracker was made in Vietnam but the quality is outstanding. The fit was a problem at first but with a little Lexol and 20 hours of wear the the leather softened and now they fit perfect. Be patient with the fit. The boots are not too heavy and with thick socks I think I can be comfortable down to 30F. All the boots are a little different but remember if the leather boots fit in the store they are a half size too big. Just make sure the length is ok.

    1. These boots are far superior to any boot on the market. I own 2 pair and looking to get another pair of the 861’s. I use one pair for aggressive hunting and got my other pair re soled and use as my EVERYDAY boot. I mean EVERY DAY!! The more your wear them the better they feel. They just keep getting better and better as the days go by. My first pair that I use strictly for hunting are about 11 or so years old. The pair I use for my EVERYDAY voyages are about 15 years old (give or take). I’ve had them re soles a few times because I wear the heck out of them!!! 5 stars for sure!! Also GREAT motorcycle boots!!!! Looking forward to my next New pair

    1. i have had my current pair for over 4 years, and only now has some of the stitching started to come apart, no other pair of boots i have owned had lasted this long, and i wear boots out in usually a year or less, and then they are falling apart. I have worn these and worked them constantly. I am going to get another pair eventually, but mine are still holding up. only issue i have had is they dont get very good traction on wet tile, but that doesnt bother me. I had to get new insoles after about two years, but thats normal. i highly recommend these boots either as hunting boots or use as work boots.

  3. I purchased Elk Tracker 861's. Unfortunately the first locking lace from the bottom (on all 10 inch models) lays directly over the seam at the ankle, forcing the seam to break inward toward your ankle causing a pressure point. There is no way to reverse this by breaking the boot in, as the pressure from the lace will always force the seam inward. Other reviews have encountered the same issue. I was disappointed to have to return these boots as the quality and finish were top notch, but I plan to wear them 40+ hours a week so comfort is a must.

  4. I just got these today and I figured I might as well break them in sooner rather than later. I chose a steep trail that heads to a ridge. I wasn't 30 minutes into the hike and I had to turn around because the heel was digging in so much. Right now my heels are raw and I'm looking for another boot to go with. I recommend trying them on and walking up stairs and/or a steep hill before buying them to see if you have this problem, because I noticed it the second I started hiking but figured it would go away - it didn't.

I should mention that I would've tried them on but stores near me didn't have 14 wide so I had to hope for the best and get them online.

    1. I didn’t think I could justify this purchase, but I found myself in a position where I could take the leap. I’m so glad that I did. These boots took almost zero breaking-in. A week after buying them, I took a 2 week elk hunting trip where I put about 200 miles under my soles. I’ll never buy another set of boots.

  1. Hunted all of 20/21 pheasant and chukar season with these boots. They take some time to break in, but afterwards become a very comfortable boot. I’m going to touch on the negatives as I found quite a few with these boots. They are not waterproof after about an hour of hunting. If it is dry the insides will be drenched by the time the hunt is over as no breathability is present. The leather is super soft which makes for comfortable walking but ankle can slightly turn even with a 10 inch “supportive” boot. I’d steer clear of these. I’ll be buying a different brand next year and these will likely get used for occasional yard work

    1. Purchased last year for Hunting season and was happy comfortable and dry. However going into a second season, I had issues with the rubber soles delaminating where the layers are glued together. I glued them back together and pushed on. Throughout the rest of this season they lost their waterproof ability. I have cleaned and conditioned these boots with the conditioner supplied by the Irish Setter store. These issues have forced me to look for a different brand of boot going forward.

    1. My dad had a pair of these that he put dozens of miles on, waterproof, comfortable, and all. He was beyond pleased with the boots. When the time came for a new pair I bought him and myself a pair. Very first hunt we put about 20 miles in 3 days on them. Amazingly comfortable and they did great in wet terrain. Only reason this is getting 4/5 stars instead of 5/5 is on both pairs the little “knobbies” on the bottom of both pairs of boots were missing several “knobbies”. Hoping I don’t lose more in the upcoming hunts. Other then that these boots are the bees knees.

  2. So this is my third set of setters, I’ve own the first series of gunflints, and the Trail Blazers after. Just the over all fit and amazing comfort is astounding with these boots. I’m not one for spending big money which is 120+ but I will always shell out the cash for setters. They are just worth every penny in the price. My dad works for the railroad and these may be hunting boots, but they are just so darn comfortable they gift them these because they walk 10+ miles on sharp uneven rocks, and these boots hold up amazingly well over each 2 years he has a set. These boots are 10/10 and I would highly recommend them to everybody. Whether it’s the 10 inch boots like I have, or the 12 inch boots like my dad wears, these boots are just amazing.

  3. I have always wanted a pair of Elk Trackers. The problem for me with the 10" is that the loose lace hook (halfway up the boot) pushes the part of the boot, where multiple bits of leather come together underneath it, right in to my ankle. Super uncomfortable. Rest fo the boot is amazing though. I have resorted to leaving this hook out.I may use them for summer hunts as they are so comfy.............not sure at this stage thoughI like the Elk Trackers that much that I have ordered a pair of 12" boots, that don't have that loose lace hook.

  4. I really wanted to like these boots, but poor design forced me to return them. First the upper was small for me and I do not have large legs/calves. Even worse was the seam located under the locking laces, no matter how loose I laced these boots that seam and the bump it creates ate my upper ankle up...very painful whether sitting or walking. I hope someone at Irish Setter reads this and will work to correct these problems.

  5. I got the Elk Tracker Boot and fell in love with the look. They look so nice I was afraid to wear them to the mountain. I wore these boots in and around the house for 4 days to break them in and get used to them. They fit amazing and I was happy. It was time to get them on the mountain. I did a 9 mile hike in a rugged area. The boots felt great but when I got home I noticed both boots had a crack on the upper part of the sole in the instep area of the boot. The cracks went from one of the holes made from the stitching across to the outside of the sole. Well I would try a second and even third hike. If that little crack was all that was wrong I would live with it. After the third day out and about 20 miles of total hiking I inspected the boots. Both boots soles are torn away on the bottom. The bobbed soles broke off and left the inner part of the sole exposed. I hunt and hike in some of the most rugged country imaginable but have never had a pair boots react like this. Some of my boots have lasted 8 to 10 years in these New Mexico mountains and I was hoping the Irish Setter Elk Tracker would be the same. This is the first time I have strayed from my favorite boot. I have never spent this much on boots before and had high expectations. I am returning the boots and really not sure if I should go with another company or not. I am afraid to try these boots again. As a school teacher, $200 dollars can be very hard to come by.

  6. First off, I confess that I baby these boots. I really only wear them hunting or in deep snow. I treat the leather once a year. I probably have a total of 50 days in them since I bought them in 2012 (8 years ago). That said, these are great boots. I have worn them in knee deep snow (with gators), 8 inch deep mud puddles, on ATVs, up and down steep terrain, packed out three elk, and these boots have held up. No leaks. Warm feet. Solid traction. I experienced a little bit of discomfort on the front of the boot in between the last grommet lace and the first lace hook when I first bought them and tied the laces tightly - tying that spot looser made a big difference and did not really loosen my foot in the boot. As long as they don't change much, I will definitely replace with the same boot.

    1. i have owned these boots for 20 + years most excellent performance over all great traction control holds shape well never stiff even after get them wet in and out as well as muddy just knock together put them on need to put both gun and bow on question about not one or other

    1. I bought these boots about a year and a half ago and they have been the best boots I have ever had. The break in was only 2-3 days, the soles do wear kind of quick though, but I am a farmer/butcher so I’m usually standing on concrete for most of the day. But they have super good traction in all sorts of environments weather it be wet, icy, snowy, muddy, etc. only problem with the boots is the leather tore on the toes and the stitching must have let loose on the sides where it meets the sole. I’m sure I could have prevented that if I oiled them regularly but even with holes they are still water proof. I bought another pair last week because of how great they are. I can be standing for 12-13 hours a day and my feet and back won’t be sore whereas wearing any other boot kills my feet and back standing that long. Hands down best boot I have ever worn they last a long time.

    1. I live in CO and wanted a supportive boot for hiking, especially when I am carrying my toddler on a back carrier. I looked around at a few brands and saw that Irish Setter makes the Elk Tracker in an uninsulated version. I went to my local Red Wing store and tried them on and was immediately impressed by the comfort and overall build of the boots.

The performance is top notch and the soles grip every type of material with ease. I expected them to have good traction based on the tread design but was surprised that they stick to solid rock incredibly well. Even on pretty extreme angles they just kind of hold on to the rock face.

Despite being a 10'' boot I have never felt that they were too hot even during summer hikes and the waterproofing seems to hold up well although most of my hikes have been dry. The last fits my feet perfectly and the boot has good overall support. Usually I cant wait to take off hiking boots at the end of the day but these are so comfortable I just want to leave them on. This makes them great for camping as I can just have them on all day and my feet never get sore.

Here is the bad: These boots have completely unprotected toe cups. This means the leather on the front of the boots will get chewed up at a completely unacceptable rate. After only a few hikes I became concerned the leather would start to tear open. It is disappointing that the designers did not catch this when testing a boot meant for the high country. I ended up taking them in to the Red Wing store to have their Tuff Toe applied and now they are absolute tanks. I will give credit that the Tuff Toe holds up incredibly well against any rock I throw at it. But its a shame I had to take them in to fix a flaw that should have been accounted for in the first place.

In summary, these are almost the perfect boot. Hopefully Red Wing can fix the toe issue in the next version as it is the only thing holding these back.

  7. I have owned several pairs of Trophy Elk Trackers, Irish Setters and now Elk Trackers. Keep in mind, these boots are put to the test. They are put in some of the roughest terrain and environments that God has to offer. Here's the bad and the good in my opinion.

#1 Over time, the heel of the boot will hurt your heel if you wear them for any length of time. I have 4 friends that wear the Irish Setters, Elk Trackers and the Trophy Elk Trackers and every one of them say the same. As the boot gets wore down the boot will make your heel hurt. #2 The sole of the shoe wears down within a year of use. Once again, this only applies if you're using them.#3 The boot itself holds exterior moisture/water. Your foot will never get wet but they'll hold water and that adds significant weight to these boot.#4 The lacing system makes the boot dig into my shin bone/ankle bone. I improvise by wearing thicker socks. #5 I'm told that you can have the boots resoled for $90 but I believe that the sole should last longer than a year and that resoling should be an automatic courtesy. Here is what I like about the boot. They require no break in. Put them on your feet and go. I've never had a sore foot from a new boot. When the sole is intact you can climb the steepest of terrain. They provide great traction. The most comfortable boot you will find but there's durability issues with the sole and there's the retention of water, corrected with a boot dryer..... The lacing system needs addressed too, to where the boot won't dig into one's ankle or shin.

  8. I have small heels and wide across the front of my foot but these seem to fit OK. In fact I am surprised at the room I have for my toes which is a big selling point for me. But, they do seem to run small so figure on going up a half size and if you use an orthotic foot bed you might want to go up another half size. (Red wing makes some good ones.) The quality seems to be there - I can't find anything wrong - and they are so darned comfortable and stable especially going downhill. And they do grip - way better than a lot of others. Going up a steep slope the cushion seemed to slow me down a little, but, I'm willing to put up with that to gain the overall comfort and stability. I have about 25 miles in them and break in was very easy. There are a lot of extras that I think make them a decent value for the price even if they are made in Viet Nam. That bothers me but everything seems that to be way so I'm not sure what Irish Setter can do about it. Yes, I do recommend them.

  9. These are a really cool boot. They are very light for all-leather, and extremely comfortable. However, I did have to buy two (2) sizes up. I am normally an 11 and had to get the 13s. They feel great. I also put a few coats of boot grease on them right out of the box.

  10. I bought these boots about 2 years ago for construction use in the spring/fall/winter months. These are hands down the most comfortable and durable boots I've ever owned. I wear them from 10 to 12 hours a day, they get hard use. I'm in and out of snow, mud, lime and mortar mix debris often. I've never had a pair of boots that have lasted this long without them completely falling apart. I was lucky to get a year out of any of the previous boots I owned, and I bought name brand boots as well not junk. I coated these with weather protectectant new and they've held up miles better than I would have ever imagined. They are on their last leg finally but they have served me well over the past 2 years. I'm buying the same exact pair this fall. Would recommend to anyone and everyone, great product!

    1. I have owned these for three hunting seasons, and I have friends who have owned them as long or longer. All of us agree that this is the best boot ever. Comfort is excellent, but the most outstanding feature for me is that they keep my feet from freezing. I have tried every conceivable boot, and none have done the job like the Elk Trackers. I must admit that my feet still get cold, but it is manageable, and my feet don't turn to blocks of ice. I won't buy anything but Elk Trackers ever again.

  11. The side hooks right at the ankle if uses amd done up the boot digs into the sides of your ankle other wise they are very comfortable and look good in any ocasion not just hunting or hiking up a mountaon

    1. I bought these boots about 4 years ago and only wear them during hunting season and really cold snow days, so I've only worn them maybe 10 to 12 times. Went on my annual elk hunt here in Colorado and two days into the season my feet were soaking wet not even 3 hours into the day hunting in the snow. Thankfully I always bring a back up pair just incase or my hunt would have been over. When I asked the owner of the local redwing shoe store he just wanted sell me mink oil.

  12. Just wrapping hunting season with these boots, I thought I would do a quick review to address some complaints I read about these before buying.

    1) There were several complaints about the laces digging into the top of your ankle where your foot pivots. I experienced this the first time I wore the boots, after an hour I loosened the laces and retied them slightly looser. problem solved...2) Some complained that their boots were so uncomfortable they had to return them. Any good boot is going to be uncomfortable until they are broken in. These boots are no exception. It took about 10 hours over several days for mine to come around, now they are very comfortable.3) Some complained the boots weren't water proof. I've spend all day in the rain, wet snow and submerged them into 4-6" of water without a problem.4) I can't comment on the durability. I've only owned these one season and I only wear them hunting, and occasionally out running errands.

Overall these boots are comfortable, very water proof, they have great traction on compromising terrain and so far they don't stink. The only thing I would change is that the ankle cuff seems excessively bulky, more so than it needs to be on an uninsluated boot. Other than that they do everyting they are advertised to do. I'd recommend them 100%.

  13. I bought a pair in 2010 and have bowhunted the Dalton Hwy for carribou and sheep, Montana elk hunting and New Mexico mule deer hunting. Versatile and sturdy with a wide footprint and perfect heal for downhill traversing. Of all the leather big game boots I have this has been my go to boot for over 12 yrs. Yes, the same pair. I do feel the boots run a bit narrow so I go with EE. Perfect with the right socks.

    1. These Elk Tracker boots are tough. People complaining about rubbing or tightness either didn't get fit properly or didn't break them in properly. Doing those two things correctly will enhance your experience wildly. My local Chet's Shoe Store will get them resoled for $90, when needed. Take care of the uppers and they'll out live you! Only knock is that I desperately wish they weren't made in China.

    1. First impression: these boots are quite large and well-built. They are hefty, cosy, and snugly fit my very wide, comparatively flat feet without creating any pressure areas (size 14W). The arch support is there, but not to the extent that it makes you uncomfortable. The padding is good but not outstanding. Although I haven't submerged them yet, they seem to be really toasty and hold up well in damp settings. I'll try to update my rating after spending some time in the snow and woods. A little strip of leather that goes underneath the laces is included with the boots. The laces can go through this item in two different locations. Out of the box, the bottom slots already had the laces looped through them, and I neglected to lace the upper slots (just tightening the laces seems to hold the leather piece in place well enough). I'm unsure yet whether leaving them unlaced jeopardises the waterproof construction.

  14. I was looking for a boot that was comfortable to walk in. Tried many different brands at Cabelas and found these fit ok so I thought I’d try them out. Wore them on an upland hunt in 45 degree weather and couldn’t be happier. We did about four hours of walking and they were very comfortable. Looking forward to test them out in cooler weather and wetter conditions.

  15. I do a great deal of outback hiking and seasonal trekking. These boots are hands down the best fit and comfort level I have worn. Very durable with excellent support features. No twisted ankles or strained arches in the roughest terrain. I would highly recommend this boot for anyone who chooses to challenge rough, wet or challenging environments.

  16. I have been hunting and working in these boots for almost 20 years, 40+ hr weeks in the dirt or on concrete, and 10-20 miles a weekend in rough terrain running the hounds and my feet are always dry, comfortable and get traction. Typically I can expect 2+ years out of a pair but not always. Worth every penny in my book.

  17. Just got rhem today but already wore them 9 hrs and man they are great the fit the comfort all of it and i have own sevral work boots name brand and some not name brand nothing compares too this pair i can not wait too see how they feel over time if u qestion rather or not too buy them do it u wont regret ur purchase

Technical Specifications - Elk Tracker style 861

  1. Ive hunted some rough and wet conditions. These boots are great in the mud. With some good quality gators these guys eat creek crossings. Ive used them on everything from shale to muskeg. I usually get a couple years of hard wear before they start to leak. Usually at a flex point. On my third set. Give them a try.

  2. I bought these boots about 7 years ago and still wear them today! I wear them each year strictly for hunting. Warm, dry, and extremely durable. Oh, and the comfort level is out of this world. Anyone who has wear issues are putting the boot beyond what any boot can deal with. Do yourself a favor and buy a pair NOW!

  3. I bought these boots for my husband for his big game hunt in Montana. After a week of hiking in the woods, the boots were not repelling water, but continued retain water causing issues with his feet. He did say the boots were comfortable prior to the boots retaining water, just not good for wet areas.

  4. i have have wore these boots only 6 months and the lining riped at place where the foot part of the boot meets the upper part i have always loved irishsetter boot for the last 15 years and this pair let me down i wear this brand all most every day and would hope this not the decline of the brand

  5. I bought the uninsulated Elk Trackers for early season hunting in North Dakota as I have a pair of the 600 gram insulated Elk Trackers for late season. They have been excellent in our much wetter than average conditions this fall and I will definitely be recommending them to anyone.

    1. I bought this boot because I have only heard great things about Irish Setter. This boot doesn’t disappoint. This will be my second hunting season in this boot. I also wear them getting up hay. It’s the most comfortable thing I have put on my foot right out of the box!

  6. Have done about 27 miles hiking in these boots. Love the traction and support these boots provide just i feel they still haven't broke in quite yet so not quite sure how theyll do yet or not just really tight fitting still and feet get sore after wearing them.

  7. Solid boots. Took about a month to break in. Brush clean and treat the leather after every week or so in the field. Waterproof, comfortable, durable, and great ankle support. Put many miles on mine this season so far and looking forward to many more.

  8. Bought the Elk Tracker all leather when I tore the sole off my 20 year old Danner’s. Antelope hunting in foggy and rainy weather, walked about 12.5 miles per day and had zero problems. Thanks to Matt in Aurora for telling me about these boots

  9. These are nice looking and comfortable boots, but like people said, the lace hook digs into your ankle. You also have to put waterproofing on them every time you're going to go out, they leak like a colander.

  10. Could not be happier. measured me for the inserts that fit my feet. That was cool and I think is what made them so comfortable.

    1. Been wearing his boots for 15+ years and I wear them for work and every day use and now I can’t get them please bring them back

  12. My foraging expeditions get me into some real ankle-twisting territory. Over logs, under logs, wrapped around trees like a human vine; and the same again, but in mud. These boots are up to the task on the inside and on the out.

The fit is excellent, which is of course a matter of finding the boot that matches the foot rather than asking the foot to match the boot. I sweat in the mushroom-hunting heat, so when I get home my feet will be wet from the inside--but not from the outside, and the air-pumping design of the tongue is effective at reducing the amount of sweat that collects inside the boot. And of course, none of the water I stomp my way through is getting in from the outside.

I recommend oiling them up well on a regular basis--treat the leather the way it deserves to be treated--I didn't think I'd get wet on my first jaunt out, but instead it poured buckets, so the leather became wet. The water barrier was effective, even so--sweaty feet, not rained-on feet.

Moving along to the biggest reason I love these boots: I have problems with my joints (all of them) so my feet and ankles are the foundation of avoiding all the injuries that happen above that. Knees, back, hips, even neck and shoulders--all of these are dependent on keeping my feet and ankles lined up. These boots are wealed, meaning I can get the soles replaced if they become worn unevenly. The wealed soles are also more stable on the forest floor, and the muckish parts as well.

If I could improve only one thing about these boots, it would be the position of the top lace-hook. It's high enough that the tongue doesn't lay neatly beneath it, so I'm tending to tie it beneath that hook.

Activities: Restoration work (brush cutting, trail construction), Foraging, Nature Education walks, Trapping, Map-making and documentation

  13. So I purchased my set of elk trackers through field and stream. I had recently picked up another pair of boots that caused issues with pressure points on my foot, so returned them and got these. After buying and getting them home I took the time to lace them up how i like and getting ready for the first day in the woods. The big day came, I laced the boots up to lock my ankle in (there is videos on YouTube that show you how to lace boots on your needs) since I was expecting to climb STEEP ridges. On my way to the hunting location I stopped at the gas station to pick up snacks and water and while walking into the store I stepped in some water in the parking lot. Once I stepped inside with a wet sole I noticed the boots seemed like they was not griping very well. the boots made the floor seem slippery, the entire time I was in the store. Once I arrived at my hunting location these boots seemed like a cleat and was gripping the ground, leaves and even the clay. I hiked up a few steep ridges with 0 issues, the boot held the ground and stepping on wet leaves didn't matter. After I made it to the location I was to hunt for my morning sit, I got settled and noticed a slight pain in my ankles, and after looking at the boots I figured my issue, the first lace cleat on the ankle. I then remembered that there was a slight uncomfortable feeling driving to the location, but was gone the moment i stood up and started walking, and now the pain was back. I unlaced my boot some to the cleat and loosened it up some and retied the boot. after my hunt was over I began to walk around the ground some and stalk hunt and noticed my ankle wasn't locked in, so I retied the boot tighter and all was well. After my hunt and when I got home I noticed the ankle lace cleats was slightly bent in towards the boot lace. I straightened the cleat out and unlaced my boot. after using these boots on a few hunts, I feel like I can provide a decent review. Out of the box these boots was pretty comfortable, and they are on the heavier side, but not as heavy as some other boots I've looked into. These boots kept my feet dry during a rain storm and stepping into puddles, never once slipped while I was hunting.
